When a tenant dies, another family member may have the right to inherit the lease. This is legally called “succession.” Residents who were Council tenants prior to April 2013 have secure leases. Your rental agreement is a legal document and informs you of all the rules governing life on your property. You must notify the Council in writing at least 28 days in advance if you wish to end your rent. Ask your council if they have an example of a tenant notification that you can use. The tenancy agreement is a contract between the tenant and the local council that determines the legal obligations of the council and those of the tenant. The contract means that you have the legal right to stay in your home as long as you comply with the terms of your lease. There are limits to what you can do with an introductory lease, for example you cannot: your termination must end on the first or last day of your tenancy period, unless your lease says otherwise. As a secure tenant, you can usually reside in the property for the rest of your life as long as you do not violate the terms of the lease.
