Japan and the Republic of Korea have established a close, friendly and cooperative relationship, on the basis of the Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea and other relevant agreements concluded by the two countries upon normalization of their relations in 1965. Kono`s first Community Development Agreement was signed in the city of Koidu, the district capital, and committed 0.25% of the mining company`s total export earnings to community development and livelihood creation. The agreement should not only significantly reduce poverty rates, but also ease tensions between the company and the Community. Kono District in eastern Sierra Leone has the most productive mineral sector in the country, but the proceeds have not been invested in local development or job creation. Mining has degraded the environment and local livelihoods. The district has been hit hard by 10 years of conflict, and in 2013, the Ebola outbreak affected the region`s prospects. But parishioners, supported by an SDG fund project, managed to create an agreement so that mining could benefit municipalities. The agreement formalized our commitment to address common security issues on the basis of freedom and democracy. Since then, we have united to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region and maintain a rules-based international order.
